Joe Mazzulla named permanent head coach of Boston Celtics

Mazzulla, who took over as interim head coach in September, has guided the Celtics to the best record in the NBA

The Boston Celtics have named Joe Mazzulla as their permanent head coach, the team announced on Friday. Mazzulla, who took over as interim head coach in September after Ime Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season, has guided the Celtics to the best record in the NBA at 41-16.

The 34-year-old Mazzulla has been with the Celtics since 2019, serving as an assistant coach under Brad Stevens and Udoka. He is the 18th head coach in Celtics franchise history.

"We are thrilled to name Joe Mazzulla as our permanent head coach," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a statement. "Joe has done an outstanding job leading our team this season, and we are confident that he will continue to be a great leader for us in the years to come."

Mazzulla played college basketball at West Virginia University and was a two-time All-Big East selection. He was drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2006 NBA Draft and played in the NBA for six seasons.

The Celtics are currently in first place in the Eastern Conference and are the favorites to win the NBA championship this season. Mazzulla has been praised for his ability to connect with his players and for his innovative offensive and defensive schemes.
