1975 NBA: Six Players Taken Ahead of Moses Malone
Malone Drafted after Six by Trail Blazers
Malone Naismith Hall of Famer
Moses Malone was one of the most dominant centers in NBA history. He was a three-time NBA MVP, a twelve-time All-Star, and a two-time NBA champion. However, Malone was not drafted first overall in the 1975 NBA Draft. In fact, he was not even drafted in the top five. Malone was drafted sixth overall by the Portland Trail Blazers, behind David Thompson, David Robinson, Ernie Grunfield, Bernard King, and Billy Knight.
There are a few reasons why Malone was not drafted higher. First, he was not considered to be a very good prospect coming out of high school. He was not a highly recruited player, and he did not play for a major college basketball program. Second, Malone was not seen as a very good shooter. He was a good scorer in the paint, but he was not a threat from outside the paint. Third, Malone was not considered to be a very good defender. He was a good rebounder, but he was not a good shot-blocker, and he was not very quick on his feet.
Despite these concerns, Malone went on to have a Hall of Fame career. He was a dominant scorer and rebounder, and he was a key member of the Philadelphia 76ers team that won the NBA championship in 1983. Malone is one of the greatest players in NBA history, and he is a testament to the fact that you do not have to be drafted first overall to have a successful NBA career.
